While I was preparing the list of dishes to make for this mega BM, I
made sure that all the ingredients as well as the recipes are simple.
The dishes that I jotted down as mostly the ones that we make for
breakfast and something that all at home will enjoy.
My interest to try out new dishes with Aval / Poha / pressed rice has gone up since the day I chose this to be the ingredient of the week in Mega Blogging Marathon #68 themed Cooking Carnival.
That being the case, I planned this one for breakfast along with the mosaravalakki when mom and dad came home last week. I was not sure how they would like it, but I was so glad when both of them enjoyed the breakfast.
I have used cumin pepper spice mix and it blended so well with the poha. The quantity that you can vary. I made it mildly spiced as we don't prefer spicy foods
Cumin and pepper are both good for the body and as mentioned in the previous posts, Poha is rich in iron and easy to digest as well.
Avalakki / Poha - 1 cup
Jeerige Menisu Pudi /cumin-pepper powder 1 teaspoon / as needed
Roasted groundnuts- a handful
Curry leaves- a few
Mustard- 1/2 teaspoon
Channa dal- 1 teaspoon
Oil- 1 teaspoon
Salt to taste
Take the pressed rice / poha in a vessel and rinse with water and drain well. Add a splash of water, mix and cover and keep till the poha is soft. You should be able to mash the poha between your fingers. Else add a little more water and cover and keep till done.
Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard, channa dal and curry leaves.Once the mustard pops and the dal turns brown, add teh peanuts and fry for a few seconds.Now add the cumin-pepper powder/ jeerige menisu pudi.
Put in the softened poha, salt and mix well. Cook on low flame for a minute, stirring gently once or twice in between.Remove from heat.
Delicious and healthy Jeerige Menisu Avalakki is ready to be enjoyed for breakfast / as a teatime snack!
- I have used red rice flakes. You can use the regular one too.
- Adjust the spice mix to suit your taste
- You can added grated carrot to add taste and color to teh dish.If using saute after adding the seasonings.
