The days are spent in hurrying and worrying and the food we eat is not all that nutritious and healthy as our grandparents have been cooking and eating.Their environment was a lot cleaner and teh produce was a lot healthier.But now changes are taking place on our life style and the way we cook and eat and the small changes over a period of time will prove to be fruitful.
Following this principle is a small restaurant here in my city that serves very healthy food!! The restaurant is not like a 5 star joint,more like a family friendly place where you can get decent meal for a reasonable price, not to mention that the food is hygienic , healthy and tasty.
Though I am yet to visit this place that is situated at the other end of the city, I have heard rave reviews about this place from people.
The owners of the restaurant, a family that has dedicated themselves to serving good and healthy food have come up with a cookbook that gives all the recipes that are prepared in the restaurant!! They say they are not worried about people learning about their 'trade secret' and all they want is to spread the thoughts of healthy eating among people!Aren't they a fabulous lot!!!
This recipe is from the restaurants cookbook, a 180 paged book that has loads of healthy recipes made with millet, herbs and simple ingredients. The book also has an intro to healthy cooking.It is a great book indeed!
Arugampul is also called Bermuda grass in English
Other names :
- Bontanical name- Cynodon dactylon
- Durvaa grass

- Dog's tooth grass
- Devil's grass
- Couch grass
- Scutch grass etc.
It is native to East Africa, Asia,Australia and S.Europe.
It has loads of health benefits
Tonic for the nervous system
Improves the hemoglobin content in the blood
Helps in weight loss
Reduces stomach acidity
Arugampul juice is quite famous and it is taken in the morning on a empty stomach. I have never taken this in spite of having loads of this grass growing as weeds in our garden.....
When I was going through this book a few weeks back, I saw this soup recipe and picked up a handful of grass from mom's backyard before the gardener could clean it all away.That handful of grass has now been made into this healthy soup.
Now a little of the health benefits of this grass...

Now coming to the recipe....
Arugampul / Bermuda grass - a handful, without the root
Water- 300 ml
Salt and pepper to taste
Finely chopped spring onions to garnish
Wash the grass well and remove the yellow parts / roots.In a pan heat water and add the grass. Let it come to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and stain.Add salt and pepper and serve hot garnished with spring onions.
This soup has a beautiful color and tastes good when served hot! Though it did not have a very distinct taste, it was good to sip on a cold morning with the flavors of pepper and spring onion....
