Instant Oats- Sago Dosa

Many times when I don't have dosa batter and am lazy enough to make chapathi,I rack my brains to prepare some form of instant dosa.Long back I made these instant oats - sago dosa and now its being sent to Niloufer for her Cooking with seeds-Sago,an event started by Priya. This dosa was super soft and very delicious.

 I used :

Quick cooking Oats- 1 1/2 cups
Sooji / White Rava-1 cup
Sago -1/2 cup, soaked in warm water
Eno fruit salt -1 small sachet
Sour curd-1 cup
Salt to taste

  1. Roast oats in a pan and powder.Similarly roast suji and keep aside.
  2. In a bowl put in powdered oats ,rava, soaked sago, curd, salt.Add more water to make a batter. It should not be too watery.
  3. Just before making the dosa, dissolve Eno in a little water and add to the batter. It will bubble up and the batter will turn light.Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  4. Pour a ladleful of batter on a heated griddle and spread.
  5. Drizzle oil around the edges and cover and cook till the edges leave the side of the griddle
  6. Flip it over and cook for 2 minutes.
  7. If the batter turns thick in between, add more water.
  8. Serve hot with a chutney / sambar.

Yummy oats-sago dosa served with tomato gravy.

Note :
I used a fine variety of sago so I just soaked it for 15 minutes.Depending on the variety of sago used, soak till it is soft.

Bon Appetit...

Very quick & easy dish.Should we mash or grind the sago?if added just soaked will it be lumpy ?

Thanks Satya.

Sailaja,I did not grind or mash the sago.I used a finer[smaller] variety that needs to be soaked for just 15 minutes. The dosa 'showed' the sago pearls but was not lumpy. If u use the other variety maybe we should mash it a bit.Do try it and let me know Sailaja

Looks great PJ. Do these dosas come as crispy or soft? I am guessing soft, but still asking :)

-Priya,the dosa was very soft.If you want a crisy one,add rice flour to the batter.I tried it once when Lil angel wanted crispy dosas and it was great :)

I make a lot of the "instant" dosas sometimes when I'm out of batter too.
Never seen oats in dosa and I like this recipe of yours.

Wanted to tell you I made these for breakfast this morning!
I soaked the sago in very hot water for about 1/2 hour and added it to the batter. It didn't show in the dosas at all.

I also added chopped ginger, onions, green chillies and coriander and they came out soft with a crisp edge, like uthappams.

No one would know there was oats there! Thanks. :)

Glad you liked them Aparna.Yes,the addition of ginger onions and chillies makes them all the more tastier :)
